Common Grammar and Usage Mistakes

Comma Splice

A comma splice is the incorrect use of a comma to connect two independent clauses. (Recall that an independent clause is a phrase that is grammatically and conceptually complete: that is, it can stand on its own as a sentence.) To correct the comma splice, you can:
  • replace the comma with a period, forming two sentences
  • replace the comma with a semicolon
  • join the two clauses with a conjunction such as "and," "because," "but," etc.

Using Adverb Clauses with Time Expressions (By Kenneth Beare, About.com Guide)

Saturday, October 1, 2011
The first page focuses on adverb clauses which are often called "time clauses" in English grammar books and follow specific patterns. Take a look at the chart below to study the various usage of different time expressions.

Punctuation When an adverb clause begins the sentence, use a comma to separate the two clauses. Example: As soon as he arrives, we will have some lunch. When the adverb clause finishes the sentence, there is no need for a comma. Example: He gave me a call when he arrived in town.

Gerunds and Infinitives – an approach

Thursday, September 29, 2011
There are certain areas of English grammar that never fail to make students throw up their hands in horror and sigh deeply at the impossibility of ever mastering them. Some years ago, while teaching a group for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English, I found myself answering endless question on when to use a gerund and when to use an infinitive. It was easy to answer the individual questions, but I wanted to give my students more. I wanted to give them a method they could use in order to work out for themselves when to us a gerund and when to use an infinitive.

Public Speaking

Tuesday, August 23, 2011
LESSON SUMMARY
In this lesson, we will consider the most important element of your upcoming speech: the audience. We will also consider several other factors, such as the setting where you’ll be speaking.
Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel. It is to bring another out of his bad sense into your good sense.
—Ralph Waldo Emerson, 1803–1882
